How MAC Construction Actually Started

"I started roofing in the summer of 1985, and at age 15 I began roofing full-time — that was 1987. In August 1991, my boss kind of left town and left us with it, so I started my own company. MAC Construction is still 'Covering the Wiregrass since 1991,' and our motto is still Honesty, Integrity, Quality, and Transparency."
Stephen was born and raised right here in the Wiregrass. Over 35 years, MAC Construction has mainly done residential roofing, but the crew has also worked on doctors' offices, churches, and apartment complexes — including traditional screw-down metal panels, standing seam metal, and flat roofs using single-ply membrane systems.
One memory Stephen still carries: tarping roofs in Geneva, Alabama after a tornado about 20 years ago, while it was still storming. That's the kind of work that doesn't show up on a marketing page — it's just what the job asked for at the time. Over the years, MAC has also handled several government housing projects in Chipley, Florida, and in Geneva and Dothan, Alabama.
Stephen is direct about what separates a good roofing job from a bad one: "A great roofer will not cut corners to get a job." He's just as direct about pricing — MAC doesn't try to undercut other roofers' prices, on the theory that chasing the lowest number is how a contractor stops recognizing their own worth. His view on the biggest mistake homeowners make is equally plain: not comparing quotes apples-to-apples, and going with whoever's cheapest without understanding what's actually included.

Today, Stephen's biggest motivation is handing off a thriving company to his son, who's been part of MAC Construction since he was 12 years old and is now full-time. His advice to homeowners hasn't changed: "Always compare apples to apples when it comes to replacing your roof, and always trade with a local company who has many years of experience locally."
