Material gauge matters here too. Standard gutter-grade aluminum runs from about .019 to .032 inches thick, and most residential installations use something in the .027 to .032 inch range — thick enough to resist denting from ladders and debris, without adding unnecessary weight to the fascia. Thinner gauge costs less but dents more easily over the gutter's lifespan.

Downspout placement is engineered into the run, not bolted on as an afterthought. The number and location of downspouts depends on your roof's actual drainage area — manufacturer guidance generally calls for at least one downspout per 40 feet of gutter, positioned to carry water away from your foundation rather than concentrating it in one spot. On a home with valleys or complex rooflines, this often means more downspouts than a simple rectangular roof would need.
