How It Started — and Why It Has Stayed the Same
Stephen McDuffie climbed onto his first roof in the summer of 1985 at 13 years old. By 15, he was working full-time alongside experienced roofers across the Wiregrass. By the time he was in his mid-twenties, he had absorbed enough to know exactly how the industry worked — and exactly what was wrong with it.
Homeowners were routinely given verbal quotes that ballooned at the end. Storm-chaser crews from out of state would sweep in after weather events, collect deposits, and disappear. Licensed contractors were the exception, not the rule. Quality was inconsistent, warranties were vague, and accountability was optional.
In 1991, at 19 years old, Stephen founded MAC Construction at 1881 West County Road 70, Dothan, Alabama — right where it still operates today. The founding principle was straightforward: give every Wiregrass customer a binding written quote, do the work with your own trained crew, and put the warranty in writing. That standard has not changed in 34 years.

The First Roof
Stephen McDuffie, 13 years old, climbs onto his first roof in Dothan, Alabama. Six years of hands-on experience would follow before he ever considered running a company.

MAC Construction Founded
At 19 Stephen founded MAC Construction at 1881 West County Road 70, Dothan, AL 36305 — the same address where MAC still operates today. AL Contractor License #30154 obtained from day one. First binding written quote issued to a homeowner in Houston County.
- 1995–2005
Growing Across the Wiregrass
MAC Construction expanded service coverage to cover all of Houston County, then began regular projects in Dale County (Ozark/Daleville), Geneva County, and Henry County. The team grew from 3 to 8 people, all hired and trained by Stephen personally.
- 2006–2010
The 1,000-Roof Mark
MAC Construction passed 1,000 completed projects in the Wiregrass region. Commercial roofing projects — including churches, retail buildings, and agricultural structures — became a regular part of the workload alongside residential replacements and repairs.
- 2011–2015
Metal Roofing Expansion
Standing seam metal roofing became a growing segment of MAC's work as more Wiregrass homeowners sought longer-lasting alternatives to asphalt. MAC invested in mechanical seaming equipment and GAF metal panel expertise. The team grew to 12 people.

2,500 Roofs — Storm Response Leadership
After several significant storm events — including tornado damage across Dale and Coffee Counties — MAC Construction became the region's go-to contractor for post-storm insurance documentation and emergency repair. Stephen's policy of 24/7 emergency response was formalised during this period.

5,000 Roofs — The Family Succession
Stephen's son Sam joined the business full-time, working alongside Stephen on projects throughout the Wiregrass. MAC's team grew to 15 — all on MAC's own team. The 5,000-roof milestone was passed in 2023. Google reviews reached 4.9★ on 60+ verified customer ratings.
